Early pioneers sometimes found imaging of energy patterns almost by accident. Some of the first captured images of energy patterns around living tissues were called Kirlian photographs. In 1939, a Russian electrical engineer named Semyon Kirlian discovered that a discharge from his hands could expose photographic emulsion material. He made a camera that showed living and inanimate things all produced this discharge, which was called a “corona.” In the 1980’s, Dr. Harry Oldfield, a physicist, modified Kirlian photography techniques in an effort to get a three-dimensional picture of a human being. One of his early devices was a Kirlian “gun” which beamed high-frequency radio signals into the bodies of hospital patients in England. “Resonance” signals returned to an oscilloscope, which could be read by Dr. Oldfield. He got particularly accurate results scanning patients with cancer. Kirlian photographs of hands were considered by some to be a picture of the patients’ auras. Dr. Malcolm Carruthers, also from England, found that Kirlian hand photographs showed a patient’s level of arousal or stress as an imbalance, and that after giving the patients medication to relieve stress, the two hands became balanced. Others have been interested in Kirlian photographs of fingertips, as showing auras. There has also been research into the appearance of cancer cells on Kirlian photographs. Dr. Oldfield next invented the Electro-Scanning Method (ESM). ESM uses an electro-crystal generator and a sound meter to visualize a person’s energy. Dr. Oldfield determined that the energies were concentrated in the same seven points described as chakras in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. But he was not satisfied with the ESM. Dr. Oldfield went on to develop the Polycontrast Interference Photography. A digital or video recorder sends energy images into a computer, with a program that analyzes the information and shows the energy levels color-coded, which can be interpreted as balanced or imbalanced. PIP is being used all around the world, and practitioners say it can pick up the aura, the chakras, and acupuncture meridians. Next, PIP and the human aura.
