ow can employees avoid injuries in the workplace? Following all safety procedures outlined by company policy is the best place to start. If you do not know safety policy, just ask! If you know it but aren't sure what the best action to take should be, ask! If in doubt, don't do something until you know for sure that it will be safe.
If your work environment has potentially dangerous concerns, whether chemical fumes in an area with low ventilation or a slip hazard in a break area, inform your manager and they should to resolve the problem. The manager or supervisor may not know the problem is there until told. If the manager knows of the issue and does not take corrective action, you should contact your EHS (environmental health and safety) staff to get it fixed or do something to reduce the risk. Worst case scenario, contact the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) local office. It is your legal right to do so. Always wear any safety equipment provided at all times. If you don't have the right gear, get it from your peers. It should be provided by the employer. If it isn't, any safety items you buy yourself are tax deductible. If there are health hazards or dangers which you feel could instigate an accident at work then don't hesitate to submit recommendations via any suggestion boxes in your workplace on how to fix them.
Do pay attention to your own health. If you're nauseous from the flu, don't climb a ladder and risk falling from dizziness. If exhausted, don't start tasks that require physical strength where your body may fail at a critical moment. Only you know whether you are best able to work. And if you're not at your best, it may be best not to come to work. Practical jokes have no place in the work place. Do that on your own time and own space. And if you wouldn't do something at home, don't do it at work.
