London is known for its reverence to history, arts, culture and technology. This is evident in the many museums that are dotted on the city. The Science Museum was started in 1857. It first showcased collections from the Royal Society of Arts and some additional items from the Crystal Palace or the Great Exhibition. The museum has undergone several name changes like Museum of Patents, Patent Office Museum and now the Science Museum.
Science Museum Collections
There are over 300,000 items on display at the Science Museum. Some of the most admired displays include the Stephenson’s Rocket, Puffing Billy, James Watson’s model of DNA, Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine and the Clock of the Long Now.
The Stephenson’s Rocket is the steam locomotive that was built in 1829 by Robert Stephenson and Company. The Puffing Billy is also a steam locomotive that was built around 1813-1814 for Christopher Blackett of the Wylam Colliery. This is the oldest surviving steam locomotive in the world. The Difference Engine is the mechanical digital calculator that can use polynomial functions. The Clock of Long Now is also called the 10,000year clock because it is aimed to tell time for that number of years.

Science Museum Galleries
The Science Museum is divided into several galleries. The Power: The East Hall Gallery displays the steam engines and the giant metallic ring on the ceiling. This ring has embedded LEDs that is connected with the kiosks. Whatever the visitors type in the kiosks will be shown on the ring. There is also the Space Gallery. This is the favourite gallery of most visitors. This gallery showcases space exploration items.
The other galleries in the museum include the Making The Modern World Gallery and the Flight. The famous Stephenson’s Rocket is displayed on the Making The Modern World Gallery.
